The name Hyson is probably derived from a Cantonese name meaning ”flourishing spring tea”.
There are also anecdotal references to it being named after the English team merchant Phillip Hyson.
Hyson tea was highly prized in 18th century England and was taxed at a higher rate than other teas.
Fun fact–during the Boston Tea party, it’s reported that hyson tea represented 15 of the more than 300 chests of tea thrown into the harbor.
